3 Types Of Custom Orthotic Devices

Orthotic devices come in many forms and are made of a variety of materials. Generally Orthotics fall into three main categories:

  • Rigid Orthotics designed to change or control foot function
  • Soft Orthotics for Foot Protection
  • Semi-Rigid Orthotics combines functional control & protection.

Rigid Orthotics Control Foot Function & Foot Motion

Rigid orthotic devices are often constructed of firm materials and are designed to control foot function and foot motion.

Rigid orthotics control motion in the two major foot joints located directly below the ankle joint and may improve or eliminate strains, aches and pains in the lower extremities.

  • Rigid Orthotics For Lower back pain
  • Rigid Orthotics For Thigh Pain
  • Rigid Orthotics For Leg Pain

Soft Orthotics – Designed for Foot Protection

Soft Orthotic Devices typically extend from the heel past the ball of the foot to include the toes. Soft Orthotic Devices are worn against the sole of the foot. The soft orthotic device is compressible and often bulkier, requiring extra shoe room

Soft orthotics are typically utilized for

  • Shock absorbency
  • Balance Stability
  • Pressure Relief

A Soft Orthotic Device is particularly effective for foot deformities in which there is a loss of protective fatty tissue and arthritic feet. Soft Orthotics are widely used in the care of the diabetic foot patients to alleviate sore and uncomfortable areas of the foot

Soft Orthotic Devices are often effectively prescribed for:

  • Diabetic Foot Care – Diabetic patients who require alleviation of pressure under diabetic blisters and ulcers.
  • Arthritic Feet – Arthritic patients with chronic sensitive foot joints.
  • Patients with Foot Deformities – Patients with deformed feet where there may be a loss of protective fatty tissue.
  • Trauma Rehabilitation Patients – Trauma Rehab patients suffering from accidents.

Semi-Rigid Orthotics – Functional Control and Protection

Semi-rigid orthotics are generally used to control excessive motion while providing protective cushioning.Cushioned, hollow materials can accommodate pressure problems, such as callouses on the sole of the foot.

The typical semi-rigid orthotic is made up of layers of soft material, reinforced with more rigid materials. Also known as functional and corrective orthotics, Semi-Rigid Orthotics are constructed from a variety of materials, such as:

  • high density rubber
  • thermo materials
  • flexible plastics

Common Uses of Semi Rigid Orthotics

  • Standing & Moving on hard surfaces for long periods of time. In these cases, friction resistant materials and high density foams can minimize foot exhaustion.
  • Orthotic Devices for Sports, Fitness, & Athletics – Semi-rigid orthotics provide foot balance for participating in sports, fitness and athletic activities. Semi Rigid Orthotics are also used to help athletes mitigate pain for training, workouts, and competitions
