Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are custom heel or shoe inserts. They provide an affordable, noninvasive way to manage foot, ankle, or leg pain.

Orthotics are different from insoles you purchase at the grocery or drug store. They fit the unique curvatures of your feet, creating a perfect fit.

What types of issues can orthotics help treat?

Vittori Foot & Ankle Specialist uses orthotics to treat a variety of common issues, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Weak ankles
  • Knee pain
  • Back pain
  • Flat feet
  • Hammertoes
  • Heel spurs
  • High arches
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sports injuries

You might also benefit from orthotics if you have diabetes and develop neuropathy.

What are the types of orthotics?

Vittori Foot & Ankle Specialist offers several types of orthotics, including:

Soft

Soft, or accommodative orthotics, are made from flexible, cushion like materials. They pad your feet and ankles, relieve undue pressure, and allow you to walk and stand comfortably.

Rigid

Rigid orthotics are made of stiff, inflexible materials like plastic and carbon fiber. They prevent excess movement and help correct problems like leg, foot, and thigh pain.

Semi-rigid

Semi-rigid orthotics utilize a combination of soft and hard materials like rubber and thermoplastic. They control excess motion and pad your foot, relieving pressure from calluses, warts, or blisters.

What type of orthotics will benefit me?

The type of orthotics that will most benefit you depends on your health history, age, and the underlying cause of your discomfort.

Before making recommendations, the Vittori Foot & Ankle Specialist team conducts a comprehensive exam and asks about your symptoms, including their severity, location, and if any activities, like exercise, make them worse.

After gathering this information, your provider can make recommendations that align with your needs.

What does getting orthotics involve?

If the Vittori Foot & Ankle Specialist team determines you can benefit from orthotics, they take digital scans of your feet and ankles in the office.

They upload your scans to a computer program and design a custom pair of orthotics that support the unique curves of your feet. After finalizing a design, your scans are sent to a laboratory that creates your custom orthotics.

About a week later you return to Vittori Foot & Ankle Specialist. You try on the orthotics and your provider makes adjustments as necessary.
